PUBLIC NOTICE
The Utah Drinking Water Board is considering applications made by the Salt Lake County Service Area #3 and Alta Town water systems to issue a variance for treating antimony in their drinking water. The term of the variance would be open-ended until such time as a cost effective treatment process is developed.
The Drinking Water Board is an eleven-member body appointed by Governor Huntsman and charged by statute to implement and enforce Drinking Water Standards.
For the following reasons the Drinking Water Board has indicated its intent to issue a variance to both water systems at its regularly scheduled meeting on January 13, 2006.
1. The water systems in consultation with the Division have seriously investigated 23 different treatment schemes.
2. The Board has determined that water users are not subjected to an unreasonable risk to public health.
A variance is a term defined by rule which enables a water utility additional time for a water system to come into compliance with the maximum contaminant levels when despite the application of the best technology and treatment techniques available (taking costs into consideration) the system cannot achieve compliance.
Before making a final decision, the Board wishes to receive comments regarding its intent to issue these variances. Comments may be received in written form if received by February 21, 2006, and sent to the Board’s Executive Secretary, the address is listed below. Because the Board is considering exemptions for more than one system, please be sure to identify the water system you’re commenting about.

The Utah Drinking Water Board, following consideration of all comments, will make a final decision on the matter at their Board meeting March 3, 2006.
